The Department was founded in 1956 under the name of Department of Plant Health, being part of the Faculty of Agriculture, at Ege University. The education in the Department was started in the academic year of 1956-1957 and the first graduation was in 1961. It was renamed as the Department of Plant Protection including the subsections of Entomology and Phytopathology in 1983.

The Entomology subsection is involved in the researches on the identification, taxonomy and biology of insect pests, mites, and nematodes of agricultural crops as well as the progress of most appropriate control methods against them.

Phytopathology subdivision concentrates on biotic (fungi, bacteria, viruses and weeds and abiotic factors that produce various diseases in plants and the alternative and new aproache of controlling them.

The Department of Plant Protection offers education at under graduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc and PhD programs) levels.

The main goals of the Department are to make contributions in determining and solving the current problems of plant protection faced in the world, in our country, and especially in the Aegean Region. For thus: the following overall activities are realized in the Department at high level :

 

 -Teaching and Traning;

•to educate Agricultural Engineers,
•being background of plant medicine and professional ethics ,
•giving the needs of agricultural industries and related sectors
•providing them with environmental consciousness and  awareness of human health and food safety.
 

-Research and Development;

•to diagnose and detect plant protection agents using new technologies
•to improve pest management methods safe and that are environmentally friendly,
•to carry out scientific projects at national and international level,
•to find out new methods, equipment, products, etc. in plant protection matters.
 

-Services;

•to diagnose and detect pests and weeds and to make suggestions ,
•to offer consultancy and expertness services on the problems of plant protection ,
•to perform the tests for biological activity, residue and toxicological studies for registrations of pesticides ,
•to arrange scientific meetings/activities, courses for vocational and technical trainings in plant protection themes ,
•to issue papers, bulletins, booklets, newsletters etc.on plant protection topics
•to submit scientific reports on related issues
